About Simon
I am a UK trained teacher with 38+ years of teaching experience in the UK, Asia, and Africa. Having lived predominantly in Asia for the last 28 years I have extensive experience teaching EAL students and adults. My specialism is teaching reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, conversation, and presentation skills through the medium of classic novels and current affairs. Students can either choose their own reading source and I will build the lessons around it or I can discuss the student's needs and choose materials that I think will support their progression. I like to know exactly what my students' skills are and which areas they want to improve so that every lesson and every course can be designed with each individual learner in mind. I have over 20 years of experience developing curriculum and lesson plans and have extensive knowledge of English National Curriculum, Cambridge, American Common Core and multiple other curricula.
Teaching style
As mentioned above, I like to get to know my students, their current ability level, what they want to improve and where the gaps lie in their knowledge and application. I design all my own teaching materials to meet the individual needs of each student. I like my students to do most of the talking while I constantly check for understanding and correct pronunciation, grammar and syntax. I make sure that my students are constantly expanding their vocabulary use and learning how to fluently pronounce multisyllabic words. I vary lesson content so that each session will contain at least 4-5 different activities and each lesson checks for understanding and progress.
